Wow what a simple but yet important question.
The quick answers are “I’ve done this many times with no problem, I’m in a hurry, I’ll just be careful”, “That PPE is so hot and bulky and it’s the middle of August in Florida” . The more reflective reasons are that I come from a time when not enough emphasis was put on safety. I was one of those hard headed “supermen” that this kind of thing doesn’t happen to. Whether it was bravado or rebelliousness; I had been taught about PPE in the years leading up to the accident and I knew better.
